Objectives: To check the safety depth and direction of acupuncture loci and ashixues may cause pneumothorax and to discuss pneumothorax may be reduced by increased awareness of anatomy and accurate depth and direction of acupuncture.
Methods and Materials: We selected two persons with over-weighted and normal-weighted adults and chose four points may cause pneumothorax (jianjing GB21, jianzhen SI9, ashixue 2 of levator scapulae, ashixue of subscapularis). And then we acupunctured above 4 points each person and scaned simple chest X-ray. so we measured the distance between needle and thoracic pleura.
Result:
1. When we acupuncture jianjing perpendicularly, the apex of lung does not face directly and maintain about 55¡Æ-60¡Æ angle with the needle. So we must pay attention to acupuncture the jianjing obliquely in direction of center of the trunk.
2. There is little possibility to cause pneumothorax in acupuncturing the .jianzhen.
3. The ashixue 2 of levator scapulae is located to thoracic pleura close comparatively. So we must intend to acupuncture it in direction of superior angle of the scapula.
4. There is much possibility to cause pneumothorax in acupuncturing the ashixue of subscapularis. So we must pay attention to acupuncture the it in direction of center of the trunk.
Conclusions: These results suggest that we have to aware accurate anatomical knowledge and need to more intention when we acupuncture around chest area.
